Former Illinois Gov. Ryan sentenced to prison

A man whose political career was ended by a series of events that began with a truck wreck years ago was sentenced to prison on Wednesday.

The Associated Press reports that former Illinois Gov. George Ryan was sentenced to six-and-a-half years for taking payoffs from political insiders in exchange for steering state contracts their way.

Ryan’s problems began more than a decade ago when he was Illinois Secretary of State.

After six children were killed in a wreck involving a van and a semi, it was learned the truck driver paid bribes to get his CDL, and the investigation eventually led back to the secretary of state’s office.
