'Free' traffic routed to toll roads in Miami

An era of dodging tolls is coming to an end in one section of Miami.

The Miami-Dade Expressway Authority has closed a free exit that allowed port truckers, buses, taxis and commuters to skirt tolls on part of the Airport Expressway.

The authority is expanding several toll plazas to include electronic toll collection at 50 mph instead of 20 mph for SunPass users.

The former free ride on part of the Airport Expressway – the eastbound entrance at Northwest 39th Street – was deemed unsafe, the authority determined, as five local toll roads are to be converted to include electronic tolling at the higher speed, the Miami Herald reported.

A number of truckers and commuters on the way to Interstate 95, according to the Herald, had been using city streets to avoid paying tolls.

Tolls for trucks on the Airport Expressway range from $5 to $6.50 depending on the number of axles.
