Romney awaits federal OK to re-open tunnel

Truckers who travel to Boston may soon be able to once again use the Interstate 90 connector tunnel, part of the city's Big Dig underground highway.

The tunnel was closed after a ceiling panel collapse killed a woman traveling through the tunnels.

Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who has taken a personal interest in fixing problems in the project, said in a public statement that he and state Transportation Secretary John Cogliano have met with inspectors and personally examined the section of tunnel.

Romney said the state was awaiting final approval from federal highway officials before the tunnel could reopen. No exact date of when that will happen was given.
