Prestige license plates approved in Louisiana

Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco has signed a bill into law honoring American soldiers with commemorative license plates.

Sponsored by Rep. Steve Scalise, R-Jefferson, the bill – HB1257 – authorizes the creation of a prestige license tag for personal vehicles. The tag will include the likeness of a soldier and a child with the words “Support Our Troops” on it.

Tags will not be issued until at least 1,000 motorists sign up. The plates will cost an additional $25 annually on top of existing fees.

Revenue from the annual fee will go to the national group, Support Our Troops Inc., to help the families of service personnel called to active duty, The New Orleans Times-Picayune reported.

The new Louisiana law wasn't the only effort nationwide to honor soldiers in similar fashion. Two failed measures in Illinois sought to create commemorative plates with a portion of the fees going for veterans' assistance.

One bill would have included the words “Support Our Troops” while the other would've read “Iraqi Freedom.”
