A 53-year-old Ohio truck driver was killed in suburban Louisville, KY, when the pipes he was helping to unload from his flatbed trailer shifted.

According to Rita Taylor, deputy coroner for the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office, Gary C. Smith of Elyria, OH, was unloading plastic pipes from his trailer at a construction site Tuesday, June 13, at approximately 9:15 a.m., when a backhoe unloading from the opposite side of the trailer caused the load to shift and some of the pipes to fall, pinning Smith to the ground.

Taylor said the official cause of death was “multiple blunt-force injuries,” sustained when the pipes fell onto him.

There was no foul play suspected in the incident, Taylor said.
