Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel to add E-ZPass lanes

| 6/8/2006

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, well-known in Virginia as “one of seven engineering wonders of the modern world,” will soon allow electronic tolling.

According to the Eastern Shore News, officials with the bridge tunnel, which connects Virginia’s Eastern Shore with the Virginia mainland, announced that the two left lanes on both the southbound and northbound sides of the bridge would be converted into electronic tolling lanes. The lanes will accept E-ZPass and Smart Tag transponders.

The remaining three lanes, however, will keep their toll booths and cash-payment systems.

The project is expected to cost up to $1.8 million and will be finished by spring 2007, the newspaper reported.
