Michael Bloomberg, the mayor of New York City, has said in
several recent interviews that he supports the idea of building a DNA or
fingerprint database for all U.S. workers.
The Associated Press reported that Bloomberg said in
both a guest editorial in The Wall Street Journal and on CNN that he
also supported giving undocumented immigrants an opportunity to attain
permanent residency in the U.S.
Bloomberg said such a system would not violate privacy and
he compared the national IDs to Social Security cards. However, he wrote in The
Journal that Social Security cards are too easy to falsify and that a new
method is needed.
He said that a national ID database would uniquely identify
a person applying for a job and would ensure that ID cards were not illegally
transferred or forged.
