DOT called on to relax HOS for tanker drivers

| 5/1/2006

The Department of Transportation has been asked to relax the hours-of-service rules for tank-truck drivers.

Sen. Jeff Bingaman, ranking Democrat on the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, sent a letter April 25 to Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta requesting caps placed on driver service hours be waived.

The move would be aimed at reducing fuel-delivery problems that have led to spot shortages at fuel stations around the country.

In Texas, for example, some shortages occurred when suppliers diverted trucks to pick up the ethanol that’s now being blended with gas.

Four eastern states have already extended the hours that tank-truck drivers could work – but three of those special extensions expired on or before Monday, May 1.
