Speed limiters on cars? Spain might consider it

| 3/1/2006

A Spanish politician has called for speed limiters on all vehicles. Yes, including the four-wheelers.

The Web site Typically Spanish reported that Enrique Mugica, who as ombudsman is in charge of listening to the public and relaying information to elected officials, testified before the Road Safety Commission for Spain this week.

Mugica testified that he would like to see all cars fitted with speed limiters, much like many of the trucks in Spain that already have the devices activated.

His testimony came during a hearing where another politician called for jail terms for offenders who break the speed limit by more than 60 kilometers per hour, or 37 mph.

In the U.S. and Canada motor carrier groups are pushing for speed limiters on all heavy trucks, but so far, no one is saying anything about North American cars.
