Toll road proposal making waves in Orange County

| Tuesday, February 28, 2006

Orange County, CA, officials are looking for ways to ease the traffic congestion on the Interstate 5.

One solution would be to extend Highway 241 by 16 miles from the Oso Parkway to I-5 at Basilone Road. The problem some people have with that is the extension would cut through the San Onofre State Beach, which is also a state park.

Opponents of the proposed six-lane road say it will wreck the environment and the beachfront. Proponents say growth and expansion are inevitable in Orange County, and have come to live with such proposals.

Environmental groups and the state attorney general are said to be preparing lawsuits to stop the proposal, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Toll way officials said the chosen path would do the least damage to the environment while accomplishing the goal.

Toll cost amounts and other details have not yet been worked out.
