Military trucker awarded Purple Heart medal

An Army sergeant serving as a truck driver in Iraq has been awarded the Military Order of the Purple Heart for being wounded during combat.

Staff Sgt. Khevin G. Smith, a heavy-wheel vehicle operator with the 104th Transportation Company, 87th Corps Support Battalion, Division Support Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, was awarded the medal in a ceremony on Aug. 11, according to an Army Public Affairs press release.

Smith received the medal for wounds he received on April 20, when his convoy was ambushed, and his truck hit by an explosive device.

Smith also helped evacuate the passenger in his truck, Spc. Morris Smith.
