Truck windshields damaged by kids throwing rocks

A situation that could’ve been much more serious ended with only a few cracked windshields when two children threw rocks at truck windshields from an overpass.

On the evening of Friday, July 8, the police received several complaints from truckers near mile marker 55 on Interstate 85 near Concord, NC. Maj. Billy Swaringen of the Concord Police Department said the truckers complained about rocks cracking their windshields.

When investigators arrived at the overpass, two children – a 10-year-old and an 11-year-old – fled from the scene. When caught, they confessed to throwing rocks at the vehicles.

Swaringen said both kids were handed over to juvenile services. He said he could not comment further on any charges pending due to confidentiality laws.

“They were bored kids … who weren’t able to think it all the way through what the ramifications could’ve been from their actions,” Swaringen said. “It could’ve been fatal. If you’re going 65, 70 miles an hour, and that rock comes through the windshield and hits you in the right place, it kills you.”

Eight windshields were reported cracked or chipped from the incident, Swaringen said.
