California steps up patrols on two highways

| Friday, July 08, 2005

Following a spate of fatal accidents on Lucerne Valley highways, the California Highway Patrol is putting more officers on the road.

The Victor Valley Daily Press reported that three to six more officers will be added to patrol Highways 18 and 247 for several hours a day, at least three times a week.

Officials from CHP said the additional patrols will be officers working overtime beyond their scheduled shifts.

In 2004, there were no fatal accidents on either of those highways. So far this year, there have been 10 fatalities in Lucerne Valley, with eight of them on the two highways in question.

Lucerne Valley is northwest of San Bernardino, CA. The two highways intersect at the town.
