Truckers making overnight pick-ups or deliveries in Chicago
this summer may want to consider finding alternate routes.
According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, work
is already under way on a massive reconstruction project for Interstates 80 and
94, collectively known as the Kingery Expressway.
The department said the lanes will be reduced, and in some
cases the highway will be completely closed, during the overnight hours while
work on the project continues. While many of the closures will last only 15 minutes,
some could drag on for up to eight hours.
The department said the first closure for longer than 15
minutes is scheduled for Saturday, June 25. During the overnight hours of that
day, both directions of I-80 and I-294 at the Illinois Route 394 exchange will
be closed for up to eight hours.
Drivers needing to reach downtown are urged to use the
Chicago Skyway and Indiana Toll Road – also known as I-94. Drivers can also use
I-57 to U.S. Route 30 to I-65 in Indiana to reach the city.
The exact schedule of traffic interruptions will depend on
weather conditions and other factors. The department said local radio traffic
reports will have the latest information.
