Tropical Storm Arlene may have darkened the skies, but OOIDA members showed bright at the 23rd Annual Rotella SuperRigs Truck Beauty Contest in Wildwood, FL.
Braving near-constant rain and gloomy conditions brought on by the approaching Tropical Storm Arlene in early June, SuperRigs competitors showed that hard work and tenacity could prevail in the end.
Tommy and Kim Turner, OOIDA members from Cynthianna, KY, took Best of Show with their 1995 teakwood and beige Peterbilt, “El Dorado.” The win continues their dominance of the 2005 show season, having already picked up Best of Show-Combo honors at the Mid-America Trucking Show and the North American Truck Show.
The Turners also won Best Interior and Newport Communication’s Best Theme award for their Western theme, which was executed to the smallest of details inside and out.
Another OOIDA member, Curt Christians of Rock Port, MO, picked up second place in the Best of Show division with his very white 2005 Peterbilt 379 extended hood.
Christians used the old-style “white-out” technique of painting everything on his truck, leaving very little opportunity for chrome, and coupled it with a flat-top sleeper and stretched wheel base to give it an exceptionally unique look.
Life Member Don Pardue and his wife Susan from Charlottesville, GA, were shocked as well when their truck won second runner-up Best of Show.
The Pardues have enjoyed success in previous SuperRigs, having been featured in the 2004 calendar and even having their truck used in promotional materials for this year’s competition.
But, the couple has updated the look of their 2002 Peterbilt 379. Adding murals to the massive 150-inch ARI sleeper depicting various vintage vehicles they own in 1950s-era scenes.
