Major river crossing in Kansas City to close for seven months

| Wednesday, February 16, 2005

The Paseo Bridge, which carries Interstates 29 and 35 and U.S. 71 across the Missouri River in Kansas City, MO, will be closed for construction for up to seven months starting May 2.

The Missouri Department of Transportation announced that the bridge is being completely closed to allow the contractor to finish the work as quickly as possible. It is scheduled to reopen Nov. 10.

Planned improvements include a new driving surface, new barrier rails, light poles, weatherproof wrapping on the suspension cables and a fresh coat of blue paint.

MoDOT plans to divert the bridge’s daily traffic of 95,000 vehicles to other area river crossings. Trucks headed into downtown Kansas City from north of the Missouri River will be able to use the Broadway Bridge or the Heart of America Bridge. Truckers traveling through the area are encouraged to take Interstate 435, a loop that bypasses the downtown area. Truckers can plan alternative routes with the help of the project’s Web site, kcrivercrossings.org.
