Truckers are getting a little bit of special treatment by the Michigan Department of Transportation with the opening of a truckers-only rest area and another one on the way.
The Marshall Transportation Service Center opened up the Tekonsha truck parking rest site Nov. 30 on northbound Interstate 69, just north of state Highway 60. The first trucker arrived less than 15 minutes after the area opened.
The Tekonsha truck parking rest site is for truck drivers only. There are no restroom facilities on site.
The Michigan Department of Transportation had closed the out-of-date Tekonsha rest area after opening the Potterville rest area and renovating the Coldwater Welcome Center.
The conversion of the closed rest area into a truck parking rest site and a soon-to-open similar truck parking rest site on northbound U.S. 131 just south of I-94 is part of a developing partnership among MDOT, the motor carrier division of the Michigan State Police and commercial trucking companies and major businesses using southwest Michigan roads.
