Former Cummins chairman, CEO dies

J. Irwin Miller, 95, former Cummins Inc. chairman and chief executive officer died Aug. 16. No cause of death was reported.

Miller took over the reins as Cummins general manager in 1934 before he was 30 years old. Under his leadership, Cummins was transformed from a small, family business to a Fortune 500 company with more than 25,000 employees in 131 countries and more than $6 billion in annual sales.

He continued to lead the company until his retirement as chairman and chief executive officer in 1977. After his retirement, Miller maintained an active role in Cummins leadership well into his 80s, serving on both the executive and finance committee until 1997. At that time he was named honorary chairman of the board.
