Mineta to ring NYSE opening bell

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta will ring the opening bell Thursday morning, Jan. 29, at the New York Stock Exchange.

According to the stock exchange, the event highlights the addition of a new economic indicator, the Transportation Services Index.

The new index will attempt to measure the performance of the economy as reflected in the movement of freight and passengers.

The Conference Board Senior Fellow and Economic Counselor Victor Zarnowitz and Bureau of Transportation Statistics Chief Economist Jack Wells will join the secretary for the announcement.
