California lawmaker targets drivers using cell phones

| 1/21/2004

Assemblyman Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto, plans to introduce a bill into the California General Assembly that would make it illegal to use a cell phone while driving unless the driver uses a hands-free device, media outlets reported Jan. 20.

The bill, according to Copley News Service, would exempt emergency calls.

The bill would be similar to AB45, which stalled last year in the Senate Transportation Committee, The Contra Costa Times reported. Simitian may attempt to resurrect that bill as well.

Simitian’s new bill was not yet listed on the Assembly’s Web site Jan. 20.
