Tennessee eyes truck lane restrictions

| 1/14/2004

Two pieces of legislation introduced Tuesday during the first day of Tennessee’s legislative session would prohibit big rigs from driving in the left lane on state roadways.

Under HB2182, sponsored by Rep. Bob Patton, R-Johnson City, and SB2108, sponsored by Sen. Rusty Crowe, R-Johnson City, truck tractors and semi-trailers would be restricted to the right-most lanes of interstate or multilane divided highways, except when passing or instructed by emergency personnel. Violators could be subject to a $50 fine.

The bills are awaiting designation to committee.

Two similar House and Senate proposals were under consideration last year in the Legislature. The measures died in their respective transportation committees when lawmakers adjourned for the year.
