Maine drops permit requirement for 53-footers

| Tuesday, December 16, 2003

Gov. John Baldacci signed legislation May 21 that repeals the provision requiring permits for 53-foot trailers.

The new law also increases annual registration fees for semitrailers exceeding 2,000 pounds from $18 to $20. Registration fees would increase from $10 to $12 under the eight-year and 12-year semipermanent registration plate program and the 20-year semipermanent semitrailer registration plate program. No changes were made to the permanent registration program.

The new law is scheduled to take effect Jan. 1, 2004, but all route restrictions on such equipment will remain as before.
