Cat to phase out bridge engine

| 9/23/2003

Caterpillar Inc. officials said last week that the company would phase out its “bridge” engines by year’s end and that it would roll out heavy-duty versions of its new ACERT engines starting next month, according to press reports.

The move means Caterpillar would no longer have to pay penalties to the Environmental Protection Agency because the bridge engine’s exhaust emissions exceed levels that went into effect in October 2002.

The company said that when ACERT engines are certified and production begins, EPA’s non-compliance penalties will cease as the bridge engines phase out.
