Phil Bredesen has signed into law legislation designed to protect
police and other emergency personnel during roadside stops in
HB1023, drivers are required to maintain a safe distance and reduce
speed when approaching an emergency vehicle parked by the road
with their lights flashing.
new law requires drivers to merge into the furthest lane away
from an emergency vehicle, if practical. On two-lane highways,
drivers must slow down on approach before passing the emergency
July 1, 2004, violators will receive a warning only. Afterward,
violators could be fined $50.
