Hazmat incidents down nationwide; Illinois has highest number nationally

| Thursday, August 28, 2003

Illinois had the highest number of hazmat spills in the United States in 2002, according to a report from Stateline.org.

Citing U.S. Department of Transportation figures, Stateline.org reported that more than half of the 1,324 spills were caused by two companies – FedEX and UPS – although FedEX officials say much of that is due to the firm’s strict reporting rules. The Illinois spills also accounted for 9 percent of national reported hazmat spills.

On the upside, the number of hazmat incidents has not been as low nationally since 1997.
