Alaska fuel tax increase finished for 2003

Alaska Gov. Frank Murkowski’s proposed fuel tax increase is still in the House Finance Committee and is essentially dead for this calendar year.

The bill, HB156 would take the state’s current 8-cent tax and raise it to 20 cents. However, an amendment to the bill would put the additional money into a special highway fund, rather than the state’s general fund, which is where fuel tax funds went in the past.

The 2003 session has already ended, but it is the first part of a two-part session. The second half begins in January of 2004; the bill will carry over to that session, a legislative spokeswoman said.
