Oklahoma passes digital fingerprint bill for truckers

Oklahoma Gov. Brad Henry signed legislation making it mandatory that all drivers, including CDL holders, to undergo digital fingerprinting when renewing or applying for a license.

The legislation is effective July 1. The intent of SB423 is to make it impossible for a new or reapplying driver to steal another's license. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported investigating about 1,700 cases of identity theft in 2002.

Officers who supported the bill said they had stopped illegal immigrants with Oklahoma licenses bearing their photograph, but otherwise identifying them as someone else. Members of the Oklahoma Legislature debated the bill for months before it passed the Senate 25-16 May 6.
