Navistar's Keate leaves company

Navistar International Corp. said April 23 that J. Steven Keate, who had served as head of its truck division since 1999, had left the company.

Navistar President and Chief Executive Daniel Ustian has assumed operating responsibility for the truck group, effective immediately, the company said. Ustian previously led the company’s engine operation.

Keate was scheduled to conduct an audio conference with reporters April 22, but the meeting was canceled, and participants were told Keate “had been called away from the office due to unforeseen circumstances.”

Meanwhile, a spokesman for Navistar declined to elaborate on the reason for Keate's departure, Reuters reported.

During Keate’s tenure, Navistar’s operating company launched the industry’s first high-performance truck line. Keate joined the company in March 1995 as vice president and corporate controller and led the development of the company’s five-point truck strategy. Prior to becoming president of the truck group, he headed heavy truck operations.

Navistar, based in Warrenville, IL, produces International brand trucks and diesel engines.
