Two bills in Connecticut that would have repealed the recent 8-cent increase in the diesel fuel tax are dead for this year.

The 8-cent increase in the diesel tax was approved last year and became effective Aug. 1, 2002.

A spokeswoman at the General Assembly said both HB5126 and HB5234 were dead for this year's session. Many committees in the Legislature have already passed their deadlines for voting on bills this year.

Both bills called on the state to eliminate the tax starting April 1, 2003. HB5126 was referred to referred to the Joint Committee on Finance, Revenue and Bonding Jan. 15. HB5234 was referred to the same committee Jan. 17. Both bills were still listed in committee April 8.
