FMCSA briefs industry on HOS procedures

| Thursday, March 27, 2003

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration briefed industry, organized labor, law enforcement and safety interest groups March 26 to obtain input regarding its plans to implement the new HOS rule expected to be published by mid-April or no later than May 31, 2003.

According to the agency, truckdrivers will not be expected to follow the new rules until at least eight months after they are published.

No details were provided on the content of the new rules.

In the months following publication, FMCSA plans to implement the rule, allowing states adequate time to incorporate the rule and to give various industries adequate time to prepare for compliance, should it be approved.

Until the regulation is implemented, carriers and law enforcement will operate under the currently existing HOS rules. Within eight months of publication, FMCSA plans to train more than 8,000 Federal and Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program investigators, inspectors and auditors, the agency said.
