Big Dig tunnels to be named

Two major portions of Boston’s Big Dig underground highway system will soon be named as part of a deal between state lawmakers, The Boston Globe reported March 25.

The I-93 section of the project will be named the Liberty Tunnel, and the I-90 connector to the Ted Williams Tunnel will be named the O’Neill Tunnel after former U.S. House Speaker Thomas P. “Tip” O’Neill of Massachusetts. O’Neill, who died in 1994, was a mainstay of Democratic politics in the state. He represented the state for more than 30 years, spending 10 of those years as speaker.

The names, suggested by Republican Gov. Mitt Romney, were quickly supported by top legislative leaders, the newspaper reported, and a bill making them official is expected to be filed today.
