Texas senator targets road safety

A Texas lawmaker has introduced legislation to improve road safety by lowering the speed limit on the state’s narrow two-lane farm-to-market roads with no improved shoulders.

SB662, written by state Sen. Steve Ogden, R-College Station, reduces car and truck speeds from 70 mph to 60 mph during the day and 65 mph to 55 mph at night.

Ogden told The Bryan-College Station Eagle he thought a lower speed limit on such roads, which make up 11 percent of Texas traffic but 16 percent of traffic deaths, would cut fatalities.
