Bill would restrict left lane on Maine’s multilane highways

Maine lawmakers are considering a bill that would restrict commercial motor vehicles from traveling in the far left lane on a multilane highway.

LD172 specifies that on a highway with more than two lanes in the same direction, a commercial motor vehicle is restricted in ordinary operation to the right-hand lane. In overtaking and passing, commercial vehicles are restricted to the next adjacent travel lane and may not use any other lanes except in an emergency.
