Rigs stolen in the Carolinas

Five tractor-trailers were stolen recently along the North Carolina-South Carolina border in a string of related thefts, The Tyron Daily Bulletin reported recently.

The most recent theft involved a rig found empty at the intersection of State Highway 9 and U.S. 74 near Mill Spring, NC, the newspaper said. The truck’s load of auto parts was missing, and officers who found the vehicle indicated it had been “hot wired.”

The locations where, over a span of several weeks, all five tractor-trailers found were not far apart; the first three were discovered in Rutherford County, the last two in Polk County.

Law-enforcement officials told the newspaper they had no suspects, but they did think the thefts were related. Losses in the case could exceed $1 million.
