A loaded fuel truck stolen from Griffin Energy Services in Frederick, MD, was found drained and abandoned in the parking lot of a mall 54 miles away in Prince George’s County, local media reports said.

The truck was reported missing after 8 a.m. Feb. 20. It was carrying 2,300 gallons of heating oil and kerosene.

Early on, law-enforcement officials were concerned that the theft might have a link to terrorism. However, they now think the truck was stolen for its cargo.

County police were called to Landover Mall near State Highway 202 in Hyattsville, MD, at 7:30 p.m. the same day after the stolen truck was spotted. Hyattsville is just east of Washington, DC. The tanker was recovered empty.
