CFI teams up with Aether for real-time info

CFI will soon know what their drivers and trucks did last summer … and what they did three seconds ago.

The Joplin, MO-based carrier is rolling into the future with real-time info on trucks and drivers. Aether Systems Inc., a provider of wireless and mobile data systems, announced Feb. 19 that Contract Freighters Inc. (CFI) had agreed to equip its entire fleet of 2,400 trucks with Aether MobileMax.

CFI began using wireless tracking and mobile communications nearly 10 years ago. The company plans to complete the conversion to Aether's fleet-tracking and messaging system by December 2003.

"We have been considering a technology upgrade for our entire fleet for quite some time at CFI," Glenn Brown, the chairman and CEO of CFI, said.

CFI's plans for MobileMax also include the implementation of ADV Monitor, an Aether application that provides real-time information on vehicle and driver performance, state-line crossings and vehicle fault codes. In addition, CFI will implement Aether's new Proximity Alert feature to automatically notify the company of arrival and departure information. Aether and CFI will begin working immediately to integrate MobileMax into CFI's information systems.

Aether MobileMax uses a multimode system that automatically switches between land-based and satellite communications without driver or dispatcher intervention to ensure complete coverage and more cost-efficient communications. In addition, MobileMax transmits dispatch and data messages and GPS position reports.
