Tragedy may move up e911 in New York

The deaths of four teens in a boating accident may bring about something many truckers and other cell phone users have wanted for some time – the ability of 9-1-1 operators to locate callers who use cell phones, The New York Post reported recently.

Democrats in the General Assembly are pushing to have the technology, called e911, or enhanced 9-1-1, put to use in the state, the newspaper reported.

The four youths were in a rowboat in Long Island Sound when the craft began to sink, local media reports said. Although one of the boaters was able to call 9-1-1, the operator could not locate the craft. The boat was found later, and the four boys are presumed drowned.
