Proposal would move containers from trucks to barges

A proposal by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey would take cargo containers bound for Connecticut and Massachusetts off tractor-trailers and put them on barges, The Associated Press reported Dec. 17.

The plan is intended to ease port and road crowding in New York. Now, the containers and the trucks that carry them move out of New York north on I-95.

Bridgeport and New Haven, CT, have both asked Connecticut state officials for more than $7 million to launch the container barge service in their ports.
