The Florida Department of Transportation held a special detail last week in Punta Gorda to catch trucks avoiding the weigh station on I-75, the Sun and Weekly Herald reported.

FDOT inspectors found 42 trucks bypassing the weigh station between Tuckers Grade and Jones Loop Road in a 14-hour period Dec. 11, according to Lt. Chick Richards of the FDOT.

Of those trucks, eight were cited for being too heavy to travel off the interstate. The citations carried a $1,622 fine. Six truckers were issued $800 fines - four of them for being unqualified drivers, the other two for driving trucks that were too tall or too wide for the route.

Inspectors also placed four drivers and 15 trucks out of service.
