Milwaukee's I-43 gets rollover warning signs

| Monday, September 30, 2002

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation has added new message signs on I-43 in Milwaukee to warn truckdrivers if they're driving too fast heading into a hazardous curve. The effort is designed to reduce speed-related accidents.

The automated rollover warning system will warn truckers to slow down if it detects they are exceeding the 50-mph speed limit on southbound I-43 in the area just north of North Avenue.

Statistics collected from 1996 to 2001 show that there have been 291 crashes - 68 involving trucks - in the curve. Of those truck accidents, 20 percent of truckers said they lost control.

Over time, WisDOT will compare crash statistics with the message boards installed to figures collected before their installation to see if they make a difference.
