Idaho offers first online tax filing for interstate truckers

Idaho-based truckers who travel in the United States and Canada and are licensed under the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) can now file their IFTA tax returns and payments for free through the Idaho State Tax Commission web site. The system was launched Sept. 5 and is accepting past due filings for the second quarter.

The IFTA program is the first of its kind in North America. The Idaho State Tax Commission, Access Idaho, and the Idaho transportation department developed the federally funded program jointly.

Online IFTA filings will increase accuracy because the program does the math. If penalty and interest are owed, the program calculates that, too. Any amount due can be paid online by credit card, electronic debit, or by printing a voucher to mail with a check.

The online IFTA filing application also benefits agents or service providers who represent truckers. A single registration allows an agent to file returns for all clients. And, completed returns will be stored online, which improves recordkeeping, the state says.

As of last year, all taxpayers who file returns electronically can claim a $2 credit against the tax owed on their return. Returns filed with tax due of less than $2 will receive the credit up to the amount of tax owed. The IFTA return forms can be found by visiting www2.state.id.us/tax/filing.htm.
