Toddler dies in Texas overpass collapse

A tractor-trailer crashed into an interstate overpass Sunday morning near Richland, TX, collapsing the bridge and trapping the driver. Tragically, the trucker's 19-month-old son died in the accident.

Cleaster Broadway of Moro, AR, allegedly lost control of his tractor-trailer around 9 a.m. Sunday while northbound on I-45, about 60 miles south of Dallas. He reportedly swerved right, then left, before dropping into an embankment in the median and slamming into a pillar that supported the State Highway 14 bridge. The column collapsed, toppling the bridge.

Broadway was pulled from the wreckage an nightmarish eight hours later after rescuers freed his pinned chest and leg. Both father and son reportedly were trapped within just a few feet of one another. Reports say Broadway took his son along because he wanted to spend more time with the child.

He was transported by helicopter to a hospital in Waco. His injuries reportedly did not appear to be life threatening and he was listed in stable condition Sunday evening.

Broadway's grandmother told the Dallas Morning News he owned the truck and had driven for decades without having an accident. Authorities are investigating whether he may have been driving too fast for the rainy road conditions.

I-45 was reopened early Monday morning.
