A Hamilton County (OH) sheriff's deputy was listed in critical condition from injuries suffered Tuesday after he lost control of his cruiser. He had been chasing a speeding motorist and crashed into a tractor-trailer heading in the opposite direction on I-275.

The accident occurred in Colerain Township when Deputy Paul Reinert tried to stop a red Pontiac Firebird that he radioed to dispatchers was going 100 mph in the lanes ahead of him. Almost immediately after starting the pursuit, Reinert lost control of his car and it ran across the median and into oncoming traffic, where it was struck by a tractor-trailer driven by Virgil Judy of Fairfield, KY.

The cruiser then was hit by a van. Reinert had to be extricated from the car and flown to a nearby hospital.

Judy was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital. The van driver was not injured. The driver of the Firebird remained at large as of Wednesday.
