Pataki Wednesday announced a plan to strengthen the state's northern
borders by doubling the size of the incoming state trooper class.
According to the Albany Times-Union, Pataki said 120 more troopers
would be on guard along the Canadian border after the next class
graduates in March 2003.
said that added security would allow the state to dedicate veteran
troopers to commercial vehicle enforcement at border crossings
and add patrols to homeland security efforts on the northern border.

the border, but in border areas across western New York, making
sure the people of New York are the safest they can possibly be,"
state has several of the busiest border crossings along the Canadian
border, among them the Champlain crossing handling 1 million passenger
vehicles and 400,000 commercial vehicles per year.
