Louisiana lights up I-10

Drivers traveling on Louisiana's I-10 across the Atchafalaya Basin this week may encounter delays as work crews close lanes to install electronic speed limit signs. The work is part of an intelligent transportation system designed to keep drivers informed about upcoming traffic problems.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development says the speed limit signs can be changed in case of bad weather or some other event requiring slower driving.

Variable message boards also will be installed in both directions to notify drivers of any problems ahead. The system is expected be operational in 60 to 90 days.

In addition, weigh scales on I-10 between the Breaux Bridge and Lafayette exits are being outfitted with scales that allow trucks to be weighed while driving. A message board will tell truckers if they need to stop at the weigh station.
