Peterbilt, Kenworth and Eaton are offering potential customers free extended warranties and other discounts on tractors with lower-emission engines from Cummins Inc. in an attempt to spark slumping sales.

For a limited time only, Peterbilt and Eaton Corp. are offering "complimentary" Eaton extended coverage on select transmissions for all new Peterbilt heavy-duty conventional models equipped with engines certified for the new October 2002 federal Environmental Protection Agency emissions standards.

The program -- which provides 100-percent parts and labor coverage for five years or 500,000 miles -- is available for a limited time only on vehicles spec'd for construction or general freight applications. The offer includes Eaton 8LL, ALL, and 13-, 15- and 18-speed transmission models.

Peterbilt is also offering discounts on lightweight components, such as Peterbilt's FLEX Air suspension and proprietary aluminum wheels, and extended coverage for select Cummins engines, to help offset customer concerns about the impact engines certified for the new October 2002 EPA emissions standards may have on their operations.

The EGR engines have the technology Cummins adopted to meet the stricter emissions standards to be put into effect by the EPA Oct. 1.

According to a release, the on-highway coverage "includes five years or 500,000 miles on all major components and vocational coverage includes five years or 150,000 miles on all major components."

The extended coverage is available on new trucks ordered through the Peterbilt dealer network or qualifying vehicles in dealer inventory. Customers interested in the program should contact their local Peterbilt dealership for more information.
