Suspected bomb turns out to be truck tire gauge

Police in Westminster, MA, say what they feared was a pipe bomb turned out to be a truckdriver's tire gauge. The trucker reportedly left the foot-long gauge atop a public telephone outside a convenience store July 31.

A telephone worker called police to report the green metal cylinder with end caps. Police and fire officials then closed a portion of the street for more than two hours and evacuated the area within 300 feet of the store.

Police reportedly shot at the pipe from a distance with a specially made device. When nothing happened, they concluded it was not a threat. However, the pipe was sent to the state police laboratory anyway for testing.

When the trucker learned what had happened, he reportedly called police. Police declined to release the driver's name, saying he lived locally and would be embarrassed at the trouble he caused.
