Truck enforcement up on IL Rt. 41

Truck safety enforcement is up on Route 41 in Lake County, IL, and truck traffic is down, according to published reports.

The News Sun reported, "Although interstate truck traffic on Route 41 dropped 20 percent during the past year, state police have added 10 workers in northern Illinois - five commercial vehicle enforcement officers and five truck weight inspectors."

By adding additional weight inspectors, the agency was able to keep Lake County's two weigh stations open five days a week. The weigh stations, which are located along Route 41 near Rosecrans Road and Wadsworth Road, are scheduled to receive new scales next spring that are better equipped to handle the amount of truck traffic.

Part of the increased truck safety enforcement is Operation Three Strikes, initiated by the Waukegan Police Department with assistance from the Lake County Sheriff's Department and Illinois State Police. Inspectors from the three agencies are doing roadside safety checks throughout the month of August, through the Labor Day holiday Sept. 2.

During the operation Aug. 8, 24 of the 26 trucks flagged for possible violations were put out of service after inspection. Violations included one driving without a CDL, five uninsured trucks, and eight overweight trucks. Other citations included 10 seat belt violations, 43 speeding tickets and 98 warnings.
