32-foot peanut replica makes National Peanut Tour special

| Tuesday, July 30, 2002

Now in full swing, the National Peanut Tour is making appearances at high-profile happenings like March of Dimes WalkAmerica events, professional baseball games, food festivals and state fairs in 23 cities nationwide.

While on the road, the huge peanut rests on a trailer, but once the set up begins the trailer transforms into an interactive walk-in exhibit with a virtual reality into the life of a peanut, take recipes and lots of peanut samples home and view peanut-related history and information.

The responsibility for transporting the giant peanut falls to Mike Fletcher. Fletcher has been in the transport industry for more than 30 years, but has never had an experience quite like this one.

"I feel like a celebrity," said Fletcher. "Not only am I driving a 2001, top-of the-line Kenworth truck, but people can't believe their eyes when they see the huge peanut attached to my rig. They slow down to take pictures, and I always get a 'thumbs up' from other drivers." Fletcher delivers the trailer to specified tour stops, where a crew awaits to set up the peanut displays for crowds to enjoy.
