A New York Police Department sergeant was found dead by the side of I-84 in East Fishkill early morning July 18.

Sgt. Edward Maier's body was discovered about 2:40 a.m. underneath an overpass. His motorcycle was idling with the kickstand down by the eastbound lanes of the freeway.

Maier was found still wearing his helmet near train tracks passing underneath the highway. Investigators believe he was thrown or fell off the overpass.

An article in the Boston Globe quotes one official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, saying Maier's E-Zpass toll payment device was found in the road indicating he may have dropped it and been struck by a vehicle while trying to retrieve it.
